Virginie Efira to be Honored with Screen Artistry Award at Mill Valley Film Festival

Actress Virginie Efira is slated to be awarded the Mill Valley Film Festival's (MVFF) Screen Artistry Award during its 49th annual event. This honor acknowledges her exceptional acting in the film “All of a Sudden,” which is scheduled for screening at the festival.

Earlier this year, Efira earned a shared Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in the same movie, alongside co-star Okamoto Tao. “All of a Sudden” marks director Hamaguchi Ryusuke's first French-language production, following his acclaimed work on “Drive My Car.” In this film, Efira portrays Marie-Lou, a woman managing a care facility near Paris, advocating for more compassionate treatment of its elderly residents. Her character forms an unexpected bond with a Japanese playwright, played by Okamoto, leading them to contemplate themes of human relationships, mortality, and shared responsibilities.

Rose Kuo, MVFF's artistic director, praised Efira's performance, stating, “Virginie Efira delivers a performance of remarkable grace and subtle strength in ‘All of a Sudden.’ She grounds the film’s profound discussions on career, economics, and governance in our common humanity, bringing to light the deep mystery of human bonds. We are privileged to present her with an MVFF Award for this achievement.” Festival founder and director Mark Fishkin emphasized the film’s uplifting message, noting that “All of a Sudden” powerfully conveys the essential need for human connection, not just for prosperity but for existence itself. He added that Efira's portrayal embodies this message with extraordinary sincerity. Efira's distinguished career also includes a César Award for her role in Alice Winocour’s “Paris Memories,” and appearances in films such as Paul Verhoeven’s “Elle” and “Benedetta,” as well as Justine Triet’s “In Bed with Victoria” and “Sibyl.” The MVFF49 is scheduled from October 1-11, taking place in various locations across Marin County and the Bay Area. This festival is organized by the California Film Institute, a non-profit organization that also hosts the DocLands Documentary Film Festival. Efira's award is part of MVFF’s Spotlight program, which celebrates outstanding contributions from film artists at all career stages.
